Water Resources

The BDM Water Resource Groups works with municipalities to help them better understand the collection and management of one of the nature’s most valuable natural resources, water. BDM can help clients predict and manage both the quality and the quantity of water in both underground (aquifers) and above ground (lakes, rivers, and streams) water resources. We have technical expertise in the analysis and modeling of water as it flows into, through, or out of any target facility or land area. Our areas of specialty include:

  • Storm Drainage Master Planning
  • Erosion Protection
  • Water Quality Treatment
  • Local and Regional Detention Facilities
  • Channel Stabilization and Design
  • Hydrology and Hydraulic Modeling

Example Project: City of Newport

The City of Newport, under the direction of BDM Consulting Engineers and Surveyors, PLC and in partnership with the Minnesota Department of Transportation, was granted over $300,000 in Trunk Highway funding to stabilize the ravine located along 4th Avenue south of 9th Street.  With the completion of the TH 61 / Interstate 494 project in 2006, the 500-foot ravine section experienced an increase in peak flow during major rainfall events causing significant erosion to occur.

After 3 years of working with MnDOT to find a feasible design solution, construction began in October 2009 at a final cost of $250,000.  The final plans included the use of 350 feet of 72-inch reinforced concrete pipe and four 120-inch reinforced concrete drop structures in addition to major surface stabilization measures.  BDM Consulting Engineers and Surveyors were responsible for the construction observation and administration, and oversaw the project through successful fruition.
