Cooperstown’s residents rely on the lake as a valuable resource. Its waters supply the Susquehanna River’s 444-mile journey through New York and Pennsylvania before reaching the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland.

Camp Grayling

Camp Grayling, with its 147,000 acres for elaborate maneuvers and ground forces training is the largest National Guard Training Site in the United States. Founded in 1913, it has also served as a mobilization site. Each year, it hosts the Department of Defense’s largest joint Reserve-component exercise, Northern Strike.

The base is located in the counties of Crawford, Kalkaska, and Otsego. It has large artillery and mortar ranges, tank and maneuver courses, and more. Visitors are invited to use the Morale, Welfare and Recreation facilities on post, including boating and fishing on Lake Margrethe.

Those who relocate to the area can find housing on the base, or outside the camp in towns such as Gaylord, Traverse City and Higgins Lake. Homes in the region are relatively affordable compared to those in other parts of the country.

Otsego County Fairgrounds

Otsego County Historical Society

The Museum of the Founders’ Feast is a takeout fundraiser that takes place on Oct. 21. Board members of the Society deliver dinners in vehicles, while giving away giveaways. It is an annual event, but this year due to COVID-19 restrictions the event is drive-through.

The Otsego County Historical Society began in 1963. The Otsego County Historical Society collects and preserves all materials that help establish or illustrate Otsego County’s history. It is a non-profit corporation.

It is a member of the Greater Oneonta Community Foundation and the Otsego County Federation of Women’s Clubs. The Otsego County Historical Society sponsors the Founders’ Feast. This is a fund-raising dinner that takes place every fall. The funds help the society preserve and maintain its historic buildings. The museum offers a variety of programs and exhibits.
